There are some indisputable facts about mosh pits: Stage diving is another problematic activity but this appears to have lost popularity following serious injuries to high profile performers and large lawsuits from injured patrons. There are two major areas of concern for mosh pit safety: The area occupied by the stage crowd controllers. Pit: area between the stage and crowd barrier.Barriers must be able withstand considerable pressure and have a raised area to enable crowd controllers to observe the crowd and extract people that may be in distress. Stage barrier: also known as a crowd barrier or punter barrier – a barrier placed in front of the stage to prevent patrons accessing the stage.Mosh pit: audience area in front of the stage where moshing takes place.Moshing: to engage in uninhibited activities near the stage at a rock concert. I'm sorry you didn't get the chance to enjoy a real mosh pit, back in the days when it was fun and people were pretty damn respectful of others.Although mosh pits remain prime viewing areas at concerts and music festivals there have been a considerable number of serious incidents and deaths. It's devolved from a method of dance and expression to a way for a bunch of fucking twerps to grope other people and hit each other. Now? Fuck everything about the mosh pit, and that's not just because I'm too old for that shit. =/Ĭrowd surf thru the pit? 99.9% of the people under you do their very best not to grope you or accidentally grab a handful of crotch (which does happen due to physics, unfortunately). At a music festival this summer, a similar pile happened and nobody helped. I once got trapped at the bottom of a pile (long story, drunk frat jackass passed out) and the crowd parted like the freakin' red sea, and everybody made a point of helping us up. Get knocked down? 3-4 people would help you up immediately. I once got kicked in the back of the head by a crowd surfer who got tossed in the air, and the dude spent half the damn concert apologizing to me, asking if I needed a doctor, etc. In fact, for the most part, they were extra nice to the ladies who wanted to mosh with 'em. Originally, yes, there was the rare jackass who would take advantage of the mosh pit to "accidentally" brush against your boobs, but the vast majority of moshers were completely respectful of others. OK Hotel, the old Fenix Underground, etc., not this shit you see at concerts nowadays. And I'm from the Seattle area - when I say original mosh pits, I do mean the actual original mosh pits. I know this because I was in mosh pits when they first started. Honestly, mosh pits today are nothing like they were when they started.
